Interview with PT Robine @ The Lomax

What inspired you to become a personal Trainer ?

Coming from a background in golf, playing for the team at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, I realised I really enjoyed the coaching aspect of it. I had just started getting into fitness myself, so I thought I would combine the two. I love motivating others to feel good about themselves. I decided to train at the European Institute of Fitness (EIF) based in Spain.

What’s your favourite part of your job at The Lomax?

It’s a great atmosphere – we all know each other and our clients really well. Watching my clients journey to reaching their goals. There is no better feeling than when they have reached the “Aha” moment of what a healthy lifestyle means.

What do you do to workout yourself?

I mix it up...
- A long run including high intensity interval training in Battersea Park once a week
- Weight training twice a week
- One yoga class
- One dance class a week
- I cycle everyday to work as well as about town between clients and running errands.

Best workout you give your clients if they only have 5 minutes?

A Tabata-style workout of 20 sec high intensity intervals followed by 10 sec rest, including burpees, jumping jacks, sprints, squats, push ups and kettle bell swings.

What’s your food philosophy and what's in your fridge?

I believe in eating little bit of everything (and getting sufficient amount of sleep). To keep energy levels up through out the day, I eat a big breakfast, medium-big lunch and little for dinner, plus two snacks. - Coconut milk, water, vegetables, cheese (living with a Frenchman there is always cheese). Working in a gym allows me to eat healthily at work, especially as we now have Grill Market on site!

What does being healthy mean to you?

Being healthy means having balance. Eat well, but don’t feel you can’t treat yourself once in a while. Train hard, but also know when to take a break. Stay up late one night to dance the night away, but listen to your body when it needs sleep.

What trends do you think we will see in Health and Fitness in 2015?

I think we'll see more women mixing weight training with cardio to achieve their weight loss goals. The stigma around weight training for women and the fear of bulking up is finally being dispelled. I also think there will be a shift towards eating for optimal health and the strength to keep pushing harder rather than simply restricting calories to lose weight. You need to eat more in order to burn more.
