Take that body to the Barre!

At Style PB there is nothing we love more than the sound of that cork popping after the end of a long week of work commitments and kick-ass gym sessions! We believe that balance is the key to life and so this month we are taking our focus away from one bar and turning our attention to the Barre! We spoke to Vicki Anstey, owner of BarreWorks in Richmond on how to get that dancer's body and how she finds that enviable work/life balance. Read the interview and then come visit the StylePB pop-up shop at BarreWorks on Saturday 20th February from 1pm. If you can't make it to the Barre in Richmond you can still get that dancer's body with Vicki's online classes, so no excuses!

This month we have added the super cool LNDR to the stylish edit of Style PB brands. Created by industry professionals whose aim is to design every day wear for the active lifestyle. Pieces are effortless, functional and above all stylish. The range includes on trend leggings that will become wardrobe staples and oversized boyfriend t-shirts that look just as good at the studio as they do at the juice bar. At StylePB we have fallen in love with the Eleven legging in grey and so has super stylish East London blogger @Stylonylon .

As always please get in touch with comments, thoughts or ideas! I love hearing from all the amazing #StylePBwomen out there! Natalie, Style PB *

Interview with Vicki Anstey

What propelled you to create Barreworks?

Discovering barre methodology and seeing the transformation in my own body. I was working in marketing at the time and I realized that a huge opportunity existed to introduce thousands of other women to it. Barreworks was the second dedicated barre Studio in London and although we only have one Studio, our classes (and Instructors) are considered the best in the industry and our brand has a reputation I’m incredibly proud of.

Barre classes are a long term investment because...

They promote strong bio-mechanics and posture (not to mention the muscle-sculpting effects!), so if you enjoy other sports alongside barre, you will find that your stamina and performance improve immeasurably, that you remain injury-free and that your muscles function at an optimal level. You will also improve your flexibility and bone health – which becomes more difficult as we grow older.

What does being a #StylePBwoman mean to you?

I’ve always believed that being stylish while you work out is possible. And if you feel better about yourself, I think you enjoy your workout even more. I love to accessorise head-to-toe lycra with unobtrusive touches, layers, subtle jewelry, even foil tattoos (which look amazing on sculpted arms!) but above all, workout apparel needs to be functional; good quality, good movement, holding in all the right places…I hate being distracted by anything during a workout – great leisurewear should feel like a second skin and allow you to focus 100% on what you’re doing.

A Barreworks class includes....

Literally everything…! We leave no muscle un-touched, we work to fatigue and then we stretch the muscle to maintain optimal function and build strength. You think you won’t make it to the last rep – and when you do, it’s exhilarating! And we don’t forget our ballet-roots, we’re tough on form and position – building a strong foundation to work from as you become more advanced. We always indulge in a luxurious balletic stretch at the end of a class to cool down and reward our bodies for their hard work.

Running my own business is....

Hectic. Wonderful. Empowering. Rewarding. You really never stop working when you have your own business. I teach 12 hours a week at the Studio still, so in-between classes I’m developing strategic plans, dealing with marketing projects, responding to PR enquiries, training new Instructors, managing internal systems, scheduling, meeting other wellness brands for new collaborations and studying for my own personal development, but I wouldn’t have it any other way! Seeing clients transform their bodies and being part of a wonderful team of barre professionals is hugely fulfilling.

How do you maintain a work/life balance?

With difficulty! My husband is also involved in the business, and has a full-time career himself, so we have to ring-fence time off. Sundays are sacred! We also have two large dogs (who need plenty of exercise!) so long walks in nearby Richmond Park help to manage stress levels!

The future for Barreworks is....

That would be telling…! We would love to open more Studios and build the team, the business and the brand. We have placed huge importance on creating a strong foundation, unique repertoire and exceptional teaching since we launched in Richmond. We have a model that sits apart from the competition and a wonderful community of barre-addicts (both at the Studio and further afield, thanks to our online classes and social media followers). This is our blueprint and we can’t wait to replicate it and grow the brand in new locations.

What is your 9-5 style?

I’ve unwittingly been doing the Athleisure look for years..! But instead of layering leggings up with smarter day-wear as I used to, I love being able to wear stylish sportswear inside and outside the Studio; now that it’s actually fashionable! My current obsession are my Charlie Cohen leggings which have a gorgeous mesh detail, so flattering..! I throw on a leather jacket or Zadig Voltaire cashmere sweater and I live in my Golden Goose distressed ‘Super Star’ high-tops.
