Interview with Jen Peglar

Tell us about the Secret Fit Club ?

The secret fit club is a community of strong women who lead busy lifestyles. They have teamed together to achieve a happy, healthy work/life balance where optimum equilibrium can be found between fitness, health and happiness. As a member of the secret fit club, you will be equipped with the skills and know-how to finally take charge of your body, achieve the results you want and make permanent, sustainable changes that will fit in with your busy lifestyle.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer?

I eventually achieved my weight loss goals when I decided to invest in a personal trainer. As well as helping me lose weight and educating me about nutrition, my trainer made me realise that helping others was my calling. I wanted to make others feel as good as he’d made me feel and that wasn’t happening in my career as a music teacher so I decided to retrain as a PT and teach people who actually WANTED to be taught.

How hard was your own journey to loose weight?

I battled with my weight for several years. Having started to gain weight at university, I then steadily gained weight throughout the beginning of my career. For years I’d kid myself that the mirror was ‘unflattering’ or the washing machine must have shrunk my clothes. Then occasionally I’d catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and decide something had to be done so I’d head straight to the internet or the nearest pharmacy for the quickest solution. I have tried a vast array of pills and diets, some of which even landed me in hospital with some pretty nasty side effects. After years of searching for the holly grail of weight loss and making myself pretty ill in the process, I finally realised it didn’t exist and set about getting the body (and confidence) I desperately wanted in a considerably healthier and more sustainable way.

What will you cover in the SFC seminar?

Facts of Fitness, Goal Settings and Expectations. An introduction to nutrition, structuring your workouts, a practical workout session and what to do when moving to maintenance.

What’s your food philosophy?

Be INCLUSIVE, not EXCLUSIVE – nothing should be off limits. Make sure you include what you NEED in your daily diet first (plenty of protein, fruit and fibrous vegetables) then make up the rest with stuff you enjoy.

What is the best all round exercise move for women?

Compound lifts (weight lifting exercises that use multiple muscle groups simultaneously) are by far the best all round exercises for women in terms of calorie burn and lean muscle development. Think Squats and Deadlifts! However, these can be difficult to master so it’s important to take your time and seek professional coaching when first attempting these exercises.

What’s the most important message you can give to someone trying to lose weight?

Take your time and lift heavy! There really is no quick fix that will last. Learn to enjoy the journey and the results will come. It really is worth the work.

A woman that inspires you?

Jessica Ennis, I have huge respect for her being able to maintain such a rigorous training schedule whilst supporting educational work and becoming a mum. She is the embodiment of an empowered woman and shows that strong beats skinny anyday.
