Interview with Amanda Byram

What started your interest in health and fitness?

I suppose I always thought I was being fit and healthy, but actually I was quite the opposite! Being 'Skinny' was the only thing I cared about, I wanted to look thin no matter what the consequences. Finally in my late 30’s I had my “A-HA" moment. I realised that I was miserable, and that I needed to really think seriously about getting into shape, the real way. Having a naked shoot for Women’s Health magazine, to promote Strong Not Skinny, was quite the motivation!

What’s your food philosophy?

No healthy lifestyle should include the word "diet", they are short term and raise cortisol levels. You should adhere to a long-term lifestyle plan. I don't eat processed foods, I primarily eat whole foods now. I try not to eat anything that has a long shelf life, or comes in a package. I get so frustrated with the label "organic" what is that anyway!!? It's just clean natural FOOD!! It's the stuff that is pre-packaged with labels that we should really be naming and shaming "NON ORGANIC- PROCESSED RUBBISH"! I also now drink very rarely. (I used to binge drink a lot) And I no longer eat sugar or white refined carbs.

What does being healthy mean to you?

To me being healthy is as much about a healthy mind than a healthy body. I don’t believe that you can be truly healthy if your mind isn’t in the right place. I personally wasted so many years thinking I was FAT or not as perfect as I wanted to be. I remember thinking "if only I could be skinny, life would be perfect". All those years I looked perfectly normal, but I was scared of letting go, scared of what would happen. I wasted so much precious time worrying about my weight. All the while being completely unhealthy.

Tell us about Ellement life?

It is a fitness and lifestyle unique online community for women. We are not about weight loss, rather changing women’s mindsets and ultimately their body. As well as a monthly supply of tailored protein for the type of woman they are, (we don’t believe one protein fits all!) we offer a support system where women can go to ask our gurus anything about health, nutrition, exercise, make- up tips, lifestyle, mind and body. We don’t just sell a product and leave the customer hanging! Our belief is that focusing on a positive body image not just body shape is the key to long lasting happiness. It’s the kind of thing I wish had been available to me all those years I struggled with lack of knowledge.

What woman inspires you?

My friend Kris Hallenga. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the very young age of 23. And now at 28 with stage 4 cancer (there is no stage 5), she tirelessly campaigns with her charity Coppafeel to try to get young women to check their breasts and increase early detection in young women. She is constantly upbeat and I don’t think I’ve ever heard her complain. A true inspo

What would we find in your fridge?

You’ll always find lemons as I squeeze lemon into hot water first thing in the morning. There’s always oodles of fresh green veg like kale, broccoli and spinach. There will always be peppers and cucumbers as I tend to snack on them. Ginger and garlic and chillies are always a staple, they make the base for my stir fries, plus ginger is such a great anti-inflammatory and fat burner! I eat lots of fish, so always salmon or prawns, and some chicken. Once a week a bit of red meat. There is always home made almond milk, and avocados (I’m obsessed with this source of good fats!!) There is always a bottle of UDOS oil, which is a fantastic source of vegetarian omega fats, and also their probiotics range. A healthy gut is a healthy body and mind! There is also full fat, unsalted grass fed butter, which I put in my coffee in the morning, but that’s the only dairy I have. Also fruit - I only really eat apples and berries, they are the least sugary fruits, and full of antioxidants.
